A Brine-Crowned Bull

Elephant Seal, California Central Coast

A group of female elephant seals had been sleeping peacefully along the Central California coast when this bull came galloping out of the Pacific.

He arrived carrying the ocean with him—wet, scarred, and draped in strands of seaweed. Rather than quietly finding a place among the others, he spent the next several minutes roaring across the beach, biting the sleeping females on their backsides, and bellowing directly into their faces until, one by one, they moved aside.

This photograph caught him in the middle of that campaign: head thrown back, teeth exposed, his weathered hide still covered in remnants of the sea.

Eventually, he had cleared enough room for himself. The commotion stopped as abruptly as it had begun. He lowered his enormous body onto the newly vacated sand and went to sleep.

Brine-Crowned Bull captures the moment before the silence returned—a battered, prehistoric-looking giant making absolutely certain the entire beach knew he had arrived.
